Perform an Inspection
How will you know your roof is damaged if you don’t take a look? Before we get started on maintenance or repairs, we want to inspect the roof and attic.
Summer brings rain and humidity, which are sources of water that allow algae, moss, and mold to flourish. These intruders can eat away at shingles, damage wood, and decay your roof. Heavy moss can clog gutters and build up under shingles, causing them to curl and crack. If you see moss or algae on your roof, then have it removed as soon as possible.
For similar reasons, you should also check your attic for moisture and mold. Look for watermarks and discoloration on ceilings, walls, and rafters. While you are in the attic, get a sense of the ventilation. A poorly ventilated attic can allow the attic to heat up to 150 degrees during the summer. That heat buildup can shorten the service life of your roof.
Clean Up
Clean up twigs, branches, and leaves that have collected on your roof. This debris can interfere with the roof’s ability to reflect the sun’s rays and keep your home from overheating. If you plan on removing debris yourself, then remember to make safety your top priority and never power wash your roof.
The gutters are awfully susceptible to clogging by the same debris. Birds and squirrels also enjoy making their nests in gutters. So, give your gutters a cleaning to avoid mold buildup, decay, and sagging gutters.
You also want to eventually get at the source of all of this debris. If you have twigs, branches, and leaves on you roof, then you likely have a large tree overhanging or nearby. It is important that you trim tree limbs that hang over your building because a harsh storm can have those large branches crash through your roof. Low-hanging branches can even scrape and strip layer of your shingles.
Repair and Replace
If you notice damaged shingles, flashings, ridges, or other parts of the roof, then take care of repairs as soon as possible. Damaged shingles should be replaced; you should not simply place new shingles on top of the old.
